Dear readers, Catholic Online was de-platformed by Shopify for our pro-life beliefs. They shut down our Catholic Online, Catholic Online School, Prayer Candles, and Catholic Online Learning Resources—essential faith tools serving over 1.4 million students and millions of families worldwide. Our founders, now in their 70's, just gave their entire life savings to protect this mission. But fewer than 2% of readers donate. If everyone gave just $5, the cost of a coffee, we could rebuild stronger and keep Catholic education free for all. Stand with us in faith. Thank you.Help Now >

The University of Norte Dame is preparing to bestow a great honor on two dubious recipients. Former House Speaker John Boehner and and Vice President Joe Biden are due to receive the Laetare Medal from the college as a reward for outstanding service to Church and society. Naturally, some Catholics take issue with this decision.

LOS ANGELES, CA (California Network) - The University of Notre Dame is preparing to award its Laetare Medal for outstanding service to John Boehner and Joe Biden. The choices are puzzling to say the least.
John Boehner has repeatedly betrayed his constituency by dealing with President Obama and facilitating his absurdities, such as compelling Christians to pay the cost of contraception even when contraception is against their sincerely held religious beliefs. Boehner is an elitist and a member of the corrupt Republican establishment that the voters are presently rebelling against.
Meanwhile, Vice President Joe Biden is an anti-life Catholic, who openly supports the killing of children in the womb as some kind of personal entitlement. He is also in favor of homosexual marriage, despite the fact that the Church is opposed to such ideas on many grounds. Simply calling oneself a Catholic does not make a person a Catholic. A Catholic is a person who lives and behaves as such, regardless of all labels. Biden may wear the Catholic label, but his politics are as far from Catholic as a person can get.
Neither man is particularly worthy of emulation, so it makes it strange that they would be placed on a pedestal by the university.
Indeed, Bishop Kevin Rhoades of the Fort Wayne-South Bend, Indiana Diocese has spoken out against the decision, particularly for Joe Biden.
The Bishop issued a statement that read in part: "I believe it is wrong for Notre Dame to honor any 'pro-choice' public official with the Laetare Medal, even if he/she has other positive accomplishments in public service, since direct abortion is gravely contrary to the natural law and violates a very fundamental principle of Catholic moral and social teaching: the inalienable right to life of every innocent human being from the moment of conception... I also question the propriety of honoring a public official who was a major spokesman for the redefinition of marriage."
The Bishop cited scandal as his chief concern, since giving the medal to these individuals could be seen as hypocritical on the part of a Catholic university.
