LOS ANGELES, CA (California Network) - Pope Francis while giving a speech to a French Christian group this week, referred to the influx of Middle Eastern refugees into Europe as an "Arab invasion."
Pope Francis then moderated his remarks, adding that Europe has been enhanced by waves of immigration from elsewhere in the past.
"Today we can talk about an Arab invasion," he told the delegation. "It is a social fact."
Pope Francis then spoke about globalization, but underscored the importance of each nation retaining its own unique cultural identity. "The best globalization would be quite a polyhedron. All are united, but every people, every nation, retains its identity, its culture, its wealth. The stakes for me is this good globalization, which allows us to keep what defines us," he said.
Pope Francis called for Europe to lead the world in resolving the crisis and asked where the next great statesman will come from, who will find the needed solutions. He chided the European leaders who are "undermined by national selfishness, from small horse-trading and short-sighted games. It confuses politics with circumstantial solutions. Of course, you must come to the negotiating table, but only if you are aware that you have to lose something because we all earn. "
So far, nearly half a million refugees have poured into Europe from Syria, Iraq and Libya.
