We ask you, urgently: don’t scroll past this

Dear readers, Catholic Online was de-platformed by Shopify for our pro-life beliefs. They shut down our Catholic Online, Catholic Online School, Prayer Candles, and Catholic Online Learning Resources—essential faith tools serving over 1.4 million students and millions of families worldwide. Our founders, now in their 70's, just gave their entire life savings to protect this mission. But fewer than 2% of readers donate. If everyone gave just $5, the cost of a coffee, we could rebuild stronger and keep Catholic education free for all. Stand with us in faith. Thank you.

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - The start of Ramadan is linked to the sighting of the new moon, which appears slightly different in phase above different parts of the world at any given time, hence the variable starts.

The variable starts are also affected by the different sects of Islam, which have slightly different interpretations of the start. Some Muslims rely on astronomical observations while others rely on naked-eye observations alone.

Perhaps most notably, the Syrian government said Ramadan would begin on Saturday, but the opposing Syrian National Council said Ramadan would begin on Friday.

Ramadan is the holiest month of the Islamic calendar and is similar to Lent for Christians. Muslims pass the month by fasting, praying, abstinence, and doing acts of charity for others.

According to Muslims, the prophet Mohammed began receivig the first verses of the Quran during the month of Ramadan over 1,400 years ago.

Faithful Muslims must consume their meals after sunset and before sunrise.

In many Islamic countries businesses shorten their working hours and restaurants are closed during the day.

Like Lent in Christian practice, the month is designed to make adherents more holy through self-discipline and concentration on religious devotion. Unfortunately in those places, such as Syria where violence prevails, the holy month will not have much impact on the tragedy there.
