Ask Dr. Denton: Ten Points for Beautiful Living
FREE Catholic Classes
Life should be lived to the full. It is a gift from the Author of life and a gift to be received with joy and given to others.
Highlights
PORTSMOUTH, Va. (Catholic online) - I am often asked if you could pick out one thing to do daily for your health for your life what would it be. So, typical of me, I'll give 10 fast points to ponder in light of our "Weathered tree" article this past week.
So often it is the simple gifts of God that we miss in our rush to self improvement. I purchase the latest abdomen machine, the latest pull up bar, and/or the most recent nutrition drink. (Power something or another... sorry ladies it's probably a man thing again, but you know what I mean). However, let me suggest...
Ten things to do everyday to make your world - and your family's world - more Beautiful
1. Say those prayers and don't be prideful - put a word in for your own health and the health of this world we share. Thank the Lord daily for at least four gifts you have received from Him. It just puts life in the right perspective.
2. Sleep a minimum of 6 hours a day .... Try for 8.
3. Walk up that flight of stair and back down 4 times per day. If your unsteady with those stairs then four laps around the house. (You'll be amazed at how much better those plants will look after you keep seeing them) P.S. that's how I remember to water them.
4. Read a portion of a simple book about something you like. One chapter a day is ideal. The mind like muscle, it has to be used or atrophy occurs. P.S. pick out a subject your grandchildren like.
5. If the love of your life is with you then intimacy all the way. Beautiful isn't she! A touch, a kiss, a caress, wow that is why they call it love making!
6. After you brush those teeth in the morning, count the number of times you smile during the day. A minimum of 10 times is required by the American Board of Beautiful Living.
7. Have a glass of wine with your meal or a cup of blueberry, pomegranate juice - boys, or just green tea. However, if not wine, put it in a Wine glass. I promise it will taste better!
8. Listen to a beautiful song. Hey, music is personal, whether you like Sinatra or Bach. 10 minutes will give your brain some balance away from the static of our world.
9. Eat brain and heart healthy foods. Wild Salmon, olive oil, fresh green vegetables (frozen is a reasonable alternative), fresh fruits (Again, an apple a day keeps me away). Have an Egg! Make sure one of your meals is on beautiful china. Who cares if it gets broken or scratched? It is beautiful, now enjoy it!
10. Read 5 psalms and 1 proverb every day. That will take you through those two beautiful biblical books in one month. Psalms has 150 passages, and proverbs 31 glorious passages. Then, quietly and reflectively meditate upon them.
Life should be lived to the full. It is a gift from the Author of life and a gift to be received with joy...and given to others. I have listed only a few of the obvious gifts our Lord has given us. St. Paul reminds us in his letter to the Corinthian Christians, "And the greatest of these is love."
Finally, take care of yourself; love the person you were created to be - and the one you are becoming as you choose what is good and what is beautiful. That love will not only grow within you but will extend out in joy as a gift to all whom you encounter as we all walk this way together. That is beautiful living.
