MUNTINLUPA, PHILIPPINES (Catholic Online) - According to the Daily Mail, the charity stated that simple lifestyle changes, like doing a 10-minute exercise every day, can be a big step away from the potentially deadly disease.
Experts analyzed 20,300 cases of breast cancer, 19,800 cases of bowel cancer, 2,200 cases of kidney cancer and 1,400 pancreatic cancer cases.
From their data, they discovered about 10 cancers, up to 24,000 cases in the UK annually, can be developed simply by being overweight. Among them are bowel and advanced prostate tumors which can possibly be avoided by maintaining a healthy weight.
Maintaining a healthy weight includes getting an active lifestyle. The study has not yet found the direct link between being active to a lower cancer risk but there is a link between activity levels and hormone balance and a healthier immune system. Researchers claim physically active lifestyles have cut down the risk of bowel, breast and womb cancers.People are also advised to dig into more meals rich with green, leafy vegetables and fresh fruits. Such items contain fewer calories, which can help maintain weight, and they usually contain phytochemicals which, helps keep cells healthy. They are also known to be rich in fiber which helps the digestive system and lowers the risk of bowel cancer.
The risk of having high blood pressure can be increased by the ingestion of too much salt. The recommended daily intake of salt should be less than 6g, with 2.4g of sodium being the target.
Choosing cured and processed meats or eating junk food is a no-no. They are high in salt, sugar and calories which can lead to obesity. Processed meats like bacon and sausage contain preservatives which are detrimental to the body. Studies found that haem, the compound that adds red coloring, can damage the bowel lining.
Reducing sugar-intake is a possibility as well by simply opting out of carbonated drinks and junk food. Research suggests natural fruit juice should be consumed at no more than a glass a day due to its high sugar content. Unsweetened tea and coffee can be tasty alternatives, but water is highly suggested.
People take supplements and believe they help but experts warned that taking vitamins and minerals without a proper evaluation may cause damage. There are few conditions in which people need vitamin supplements and they are usually prescribed. A healthy, balanced diet is the recommended way to ingest vitamins and nutrients.
Breast cancer risk can decrease by breastfeeding. It not only helps mothers get back to a healthy weight, it also helps destroy damaged cells. Exclusively breastfed babies -over a period of 6 months- have been found to be healthier than bottle-fed infants and develop stronger immune systems due to the nutrient-rich breastmilk.
Women are advised not to have more than a single serving of any alcoholic beverage in a day and no more than two for men. Experts suggested people drink alcohol served in small glasses or to dilute alcohol with water. The Daily Mail reported that alcohol can increase the risk of mouth and throat, esophagus, liver, bowel and breast cancers, though it is more lethal to smokers.
Cigarettes and tobacco use remain the top lethal habits, causing the highest number of deaths from preventable diseases in England. Roughly 90 percent of lung cancer cases are caused by smoking while other chemicals contained in cigarettes can add to the development of other types of cancer.
Remember, our bodies are mortal and we only get one. Take care of it.
