Is coffee really good for you? New research finds coffee may reduce risk of some cancers

Caffeinated coffee drinkers are at a lower risk of having bowel cancer, as well as dying from the disease and other types, according to recent data. Those who drink four to five mugs of coffee a day were found to cut, by almost a half, the odds of bowel cancer recurrence. This suggests that caffeine prohibits the inflammation that cancer cells thrive on.

MUNTINLUPA, PHILIPPINES (Catholic Online) - "We found that coffee drinkers had a lower risk of the cancer coming back and a significantly greater survival and chance of a cure. If you are a coffee drinker and are being treated for colon cancer, don't stop. But if you're not a coffee drinker and wondering whether to start, you should first discuss it with your physician," explained Dr. Charles Fuchs, researcher for the Journal of Clinical Oncology.
According to the study conducted by the Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, consuming about 460mg of caffeine a day sets back the possibility of bowel cancer recurrence by 42 percent. They also found that it helps reduce the likelihood of dying from cancer by 33 percent, while consuming products with smaller amounts of caffeine tend to have lower amount of health benefits, according to The Daily Mail.
The study was conducted observing 1,000 patients, the first completed to determine the association of caffeine intake with the possibility of recurrence of bowel cancer.
Researchers found that caffeinated coffee intake also helps reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, although the reason why the substance has such an effect to patients is undetermined, believing that it is caffeine and not other included substances. The researchers suspect that caffeine makes the body more sensitive to insulin, reducing the inflammation necessary to cancer and diabetes development.
