Contrary hasty conclusions made by research, it is not excessive sleeping that causes death. Instead, it is the other way around. Lack of sleep has been found to cause high blood pressure, heart diseases and diabetes.

MUNTINLUPA, PHILIPPINES (Catholic Online) - When the news broke out that sleeping too much can cause stroke, people who are always early to go to bed at night and late to rise in the morning were alarmed. Most decided to change their lifestyle into what they thought was "healthier" - sleeping late.
Regular excessive sleeping might be a sign of an underlying illness such as sleep apnea, diabetes and heart disease. These are sure to increase your risk of stroke.
However, studies in the medical field have proven that lack of sleep is more fatal than having too much of it.

Chronic sleep deficiency is very dangerous. According to a study conducted by the Southern Society for Clinical Investigation in 1999, lack of sleep impairs the normal secretion of melatonin - a hormone supposedly secreted by the pineal gland and is important in regulating sleep and wake patterns, as well as other bodily hormones.
Lack of sleep can cause confusion, failure to easily recognize faces and names, concentration problems, headaches and moodiness. People who do not get enough sleep are usually observed to be grumpy and irritable. This can greatly affect your relationship with your family, friends, and co-workers.
