Dear readers, Catholic Online was de-platformed by Shopify for our pro-life beliefs. They shut down our Catholic Online, Catholic Online School, Prayer Candles, and Catholic Online Learning Resources—essential faith tools serving over 1.4 million students and millions of families worldwide. Our founders, now in their 70's, just gave their entire life savings to protect this mission. But fewer than 2% of readers donate. If everyone gave just $5, the cost of a coffee, we could rebuild stronger and keep Catholic education free for all. Stand with us in faith. Thank you.Help Now >

Now dubbed a "medical miracle," the birth of Silas Philips took doctors by surprise when he was born still inside his amniotic sac. Silas' birth miracle is extremely rare, only 1 in 80,000 births are similar to his.

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - When his mother went into labor three months before her due date, fear for Silas' life was already prominent.
Once the doctors performed a Caesarean section on his mother, Chelsea, at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in California, they were not only shocked to see Silas was healthy, but they could not believe their eyes when they noticed his amniotic sac was still intact.

Typically, this sac breaks during labor - hence the term water-breaking. During a C-section, the surgeon cuts through it while cutting open the mother.
"Even though it sounds cliched, we caught our breath," stated Dr. William Binder, the doctor who delivered Silas. "It really felt like a moment of awe... and one that will stick in my mind for some time.
"He was seconds old and still in the water bag, with the placenta and umbilical cord tucked inside."
Through the amniotic sac, you could clearly see Silas' face, hair, arms and legs.

"It was actually really cool to see. And when I heard that was actually really rare, I was like, 'oh my gosh, you're a special little baby,'" explained Silas' mother, who was unaware of her baby's miraculous birth until seeing the photos taken by the doctor.
Silas is expected to go home within the next month, despite being born at just 26 weeks.
