LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - Professional Disposables International Inc., (PDI) of Orangeberg New York, has issued a voluntary recall of five different kinds of packages of non-sterile prep-pads because of what company officials call, "very low levels" of bacillus cereus bacteria.

Bacillus cereus bacterial contamination also prompted the recall of wipes from another maker earlier in the year, the H&P Industries Inc. and the Triad Group.

That company faces recalls, shutdown, and federal lawsuits for illness and a death allegedly resulting from infections caused by contamination. That contamination caused a 2-yearl-old child to die.

The current PDI voluntary recall came after federal inspectors for the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) visited the plant and detected the presence of the potentially deadly bacteria.

However, company officials stressed to the media that the levels detected were well within regulatory limits and that the recall was voluntary.

A spokeswoman for PDI said, "We're a responsible manufacturer and we're taking prudent action."

The two companies do have a common supplier and that might be where attention turns next. Both PDI and H&P Industries use Tudor Converted Products Inc. of Summerville, S.C..  H&P Industries has claimed that the contamination in their products likely came from Tudor.

For now, the risk of infection seems minimal, at worst.

FDA officials have not commented on PDI's voluntary recall effort.
