We ask you, urgently: don’t scroll past this
Dear readers, Catholic Online was de-platformed by Shopify for our pro-life beliefs. They shut down our Catholic Online, Catholic Online School, Prayer Candles, and Catholic Online Learning Resources—essential faith tools serving over 1.4 million students and millions of families worldwide. Our founders, now in their 70's, just gave their entire life savings to protect this mission. But fewer than 2% of readers donate. If everyone gave just $5, the cost of a coffee, we could rebuild stronger and keep Catholic education free for all. Stand with us in faith. Thank you.Help Now >

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (Catholic Online) - I am going to be 30 this July. I am between 6'-1" and 6'-2", and the worst part is I am about 300-305 lbs. I really want to lose weight, but I don't have the drive to get up and just do it. Have any suggestions?
Dear Soon to be 30,
When you say you don't have the drive to get up and just do it, I think of workouts not diet. If that is true then first and foremost thing you have to ask yourself is .... Are you committed to making a life change? I believe that is the question which will open up a new world for you. If the answer is truly yes then let's get started. We will offer two well known options and then our thoughts on a nutritional plan and an extremely simple exercise routine.
Weight watchers or Jenny Craig are both very real options for you. They force you into an obligation and personal commitment. The fact that they have a real person in front of you makes the decision to loose weight even more direct. The weigh in concept and diet plan reviews would be helpful. Unfortunately, most men with your concerns aren't willing to go to a Weight watchers program because of the high number of women present. It just a guy thing, sorry ladies. Option number two is as follows.
If you are like 90% of Americans and go to a fast food restaurants, the first change is eat only grilled chicken or salads. Drink non-sugar teas and water. Stay clear of the diet sodas there is evidence that they actually will stimulate you to eat more. P.S. makes sense your body wants to fill those empty calories. If you have to have a pizza then thin crust and don't eat the end crust. Oh by the way a medium and preferably a small. Use lot of water to fill you up. Before each meal drink a full glass of water before you put one speck of food in your mouth. We want to fill the stomach and give your body what it needs. P.S.S. we are made up largely of water. It's true.
Do you need a kick start? Then simply for one week don't eat any bread, white carbohydrates (white potatoes, white rice, sugar.....) sweets. At the end of the week you will be 5 - 10lbs lighter and ready to eat your arm or a tub of ice cream. Don't! Instead bring in the heaviest coarsest bread you can find into your diet (1 maximum 2 per day) and add a single square of dark chocolate for sweet emergencies..... No more than 1 per day. Hey I am being nice about the chocolate. In order to switch from milk chocolate, ice cream or other sweets to dark chocolate try the dark chocolate with mint or almond. Dark chocolate really is in the 70% cocoa level but start with the 60% range. You have two weeks to make the percentage convert.
Back to bread..... For the rest of your life the bread you eat should have the grains visually present! Ezekiel bread is one example. This type of grainy bread gives you great vitamin E and reasonable protein. The grains are excellent for your colon health and have a low glycemic index when compared to a white roll. "Man cannot live on bread alone" but his body could survive on water and grains of wheat. Food for thought.... Pun intended.
Now about those portions. The biggy size is over. It's not cool, it's not trendy, and it reeks of gluttony. You now that old seven deadly sin thing. Come on, portion control is the only study ever shown to increase longevity. There has to be something to deeply spiritual and healthy to this. Many of our greatest saints were well aware of this beautiful tradition.
As Barry Sears so eloquently states in his book the Zone Diet, portion control can be as simple as filling a standard plate with a piece of meat or tofu the size of your palm (Not Your Hand) and the rest of the plate green vegetables. Eat this portion size two to three times a day. Breakfast should be a variation of eggs, steel cut oatmeal, yogurt with fresh fruit, Canadian bacon = lean ham, and salmon. For your on the run breakfast go for the kashi bar and green tea breakfast. Remember this is the fall back emergency breakfast not the main stay.
Exercise has to be started simply. For your personality any significant workout routine is going to require an obligation. The best choice is a personal trainer because of the one on one involvement. The second best choice is a class. Tae Kwon Do, Tai Chi, kick boxing, or simply ball room dancing. As always my wife, Michelle, the voice of reason pulls me off the soap box to give you real minimal requirements to get you started. Simply when you get home at night don't change clothing just get out of the car and walk 10 blocks. That is 5 blocks up and 5 blocks back. If it's cold then up and down a full flight of stairs 5 times. You will feel great in a week and after 8 weeks you'll be looking for that next level. Trust me on this one it works!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
