Dear readers, Catholic Online was de-platformed by Shopify for our pro-life beliefs. They shut down our Catholic Online, Catholic Online School, Prayer Candles, and Catholic Online Learning Resources—essential faith tools serving over 1.4 million students and millions of families worldwide. Our founders, now in their 70's, just gave their entire life savings to protect this mission. But fewer than 2% of readers donate. If everyone gave just $5, the cost of a coffee, we could rebuild stronger and keep Catholic education free for all. Stand with us in faith. Thank you.Help Now >

Anthropocentric global warming is going to make you sick, according to a new federal report. The 332-page report was released Monday and it predicts a host of consequences from global warming that will begin, or have already begin to affect the country.

LOS ANGELES, CA (California Network) - The United States has enjoyed a very privileged position in the world. Thanks to geography and our abundant relative wealth, the U.S. has suffered among the least of all nations due to global climate change. Whereas some countries have endured many crippling droughts or inundating monsoons, the climate in the USA has at worst been, just a little warmer than normal, or in the northeast even cooler.
However, this blessed status is predicted to change and indeed, it may already be changing for the worst. The past two years are the hottest on record, and 2016 is predicted to pass all prior years as the hottest year on record. There is no way to tell if this trend will reverse.
Global climate change will result in longer, hotter summers, longer allergy seasons, more pollution, dirtier water, and more diseases spread by insects such as ticks and mosquitoes. Heat waves will become more frequent and deadly, especially threatening the elderly. Summer heat deaths are expected to exceed the expected decline in deaths from the cold. Asthma is on the rise and is already the leading cause of child admissions to hospitals.
The report places the blame for these growing problems on global warming and laments the "vast disconnect between the magnitude of the problem...and the response of government agencies."
Global warming is the result of human CO2 emissions into the atmosphere, which have increased rapidly over the past century. We know these are human emissions because man-made CO2 has a different isotope than natural CO2 emissions, such as from volcanoes. Nature consumes some of this CO3, which causes forests to grow, but we are producing much more CO2 than nature can absorb, leading to a significant annual net increase of CO2 in the atmosphere. The gas traps heat every warms the atmosphere.
The effect this CO2 is having is causing the planet to warm faster than anytime in the past 67 million years. Centuries worth of warming are taking place in just decades, making it impossible for many species to adapt to changes in their habitats.
Global warming is a massive concern because it will disrupt established patterns of human activity. As species are lost, we risk disruption in food chains. As climate shifts, crop yields will be affected. Sea levels will rise, displacing millions. Individual lifestyles are already being compelled to change in parts of the Third World, because climate is shifting so rapidly. Crop failures and other natural disruptions lead people to engage in alternative activities, not all of them desirable.
The report is based on 1,800 studies published in scientific journals as well as new research. The report was also reviewed by the National Academy of Sciences.
Despite the high degree of confidence and the actual changes occurring right in front of people's eyes, it is unlikely the report will change behaviors. As a result, the report is more a promise of things to come, rather than a warning.
