A new poll by NBC News and the Wall Street Journal reveals that more Americans now oppose abortion after 20 weeks than support it. The poll reflects that more Americans are getting the facts about abortion.

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - In a new poll from NBC News and the Wall Street Journal, forty-four percent of respondents say they support banning abortions after 20 weeks and just 37 percent say they oppose such measures.

So far, twelve states have passed laws protecting life after 20 weeks, although Democrats and extreme leftists have advocated and sued to block these laws.

Interestingly, the poll revealed that even twenty percent of people who say they support the practice of abortion are still opposed to abortion after 20 weeks.

At 20 weeks, a baby is close to viability outside the womb and other measures to relieve mothers of responsibility can be taken, such as adoption. Although there is no argument that can justify abortion at any point, even the weak arguments of abortionists evaporate after that point.

At least 48 percent of Americans favor better laws either banning abortion, or permitting it only with narrow exceptions, such as to protect the life of the mother. Only 49 percent say it should be legal always, or most of the time.

This means that a majority likely believes abortion should be banned, or at least restricted. It is the unspoken power behind recent successes of pro-life legislation that while not banning abortion, provides improved safety measures for mothers and restricts the use of late-term abortion as a form of birth control.

The Catholic Church is opposed to all forms of abortion, as well as the use of abortifacients and contraceptives. Contrary to popular belief however, the Church does support birth control through natural family planning. Artificial methods are morally wrong and can be potentially dangerous.

More importantly, the Church teaches that sexual activity, the precursor to conception and life, should be reserved and exercised only in the context of a monogamous marriage. Unfortunately, Americans have become very blasť in their attitude towards sex and deviant sexual behavior has become accepted in mainstream society.

However, a refreshing wave of realization has also swept the nation. More and more people are realizing that such morality, or rather a lack thereof, is bankrupt and does not bring promised happiness and fulfillment.

Where can people find fulfillment?

In their faith and in their children, all gifts from a loving God who created them to live in communion with Him. It good to see that more Americans now agree.
