Romney, Santorum neck-and-neck in Michigan
Romney has lead in Arizona
According to a recent ABC News Poll, GOP presidential hopefuls Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum are neck-and-neck in Michigan, which is Romney's birthplace. Romney maintains a comfortable lead in Arizona.
Less than a week before the crucial Republican presidential primary in Michigan, a new poll from NBC News/Marist shows Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum locked in a statistical tie. A separate NBC/Marist survey shows Romney leading in Arizona, which holds its primary the same day.
The state of Michigan has turned into a make-or-break contest for Romney. The former Massachusetts governor gets the support of 37 percent of likely GOP primary voters, including those who are leaning toward a particular candidate.
The former Pennsylvania senator gets 35 percent, followed by Texas Rep. Ron Paul at 13 percent and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich at 8 percent.
"Michigan is neck and neck," pollster Lee Miringoff says. Miringoff is the director of the Marist College Institute for Public Opinion, which conducted both surveys.
Romney is on safer ground in Arizona. He receives the support of 43 percent of likely GOP primary voters; Santorum gets 27 percent, Gingrich 16 percent and Paul 11 percent.
President Barack Obama still enjoys a double-digit edge over his closest GOP competition in Michigan, which is a state Republicans are hoping to target. Obama is still trailing the leading Republicans in Arizona.
Support for Romney and Santorum in both states breaks down along ideological lines, as well as whether voters have already cast their ballots.
Santorum leads Romney in Michigan among self-identified Tea Party supporters, 48 to 29 percent, and those who describe themselves as "very conservative," 59 to 20 percent.
For those who fail to see the appeal of the Tea Party, Romney is ahead by more than 20 points, 45 to 24 percent.
Among those who have already voted absentee in Michigan, 16 percent of likely GOP voters, Romney leads Santorum, 49 to 26 percent.
The same ideological pattern is true in Arizona, although Romney performs much better with the most conservative voters there than in Michigan. Among those who have voted early or absentee in Arizona, more than half of all likely Republicans voters in the poll Romney holds a 30-point advantage over Santorum, 52 to 22 percent.
Obama leads Romney in Michigan by nearly 20 points among registered voters, 51 to 33 percent, with 15 percent undecided.

Rick Santorum damaged himself in the last debate by failing to explain his spending record. I am a Tea Party member who is waiting for any candidate who could present a viable plan for a balanced budget in my lifetime, and Rick didn't do it. He keeps straying off into social issues instead of focusing on fiscal problems that could destroy our nation in the foreseeable future. Romney and Newt present long term goals that will never happen. Ron Paul will "cut $1 trillion from the budget" but hasn't a clue of how to get it passed by Congress. As it stands now, there is no hope for our nation's fiscal problems with the current field of GOP and Democrat candidates for president.
Finally, the Americans are waking up to the reality that Rick Santorum is the only candidate understanding the needs of the people. Yes, we are fighting spirits, bad spirits, and it is a tough battle. Good luck and God bless.
