LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - China is not the sleepy backwater that many people assume it to be. Instead it is the world's mightiest industrial power with massive factory complexes larger than some good-sized towns in America.

Children are indoctrinated young and many learn the value of strict obedience before they learn much else. This is the power of state control. And although there is dissent, only a minority of Chinese participate, and most don't care as their standard of living increases.

Francis Xavier Patron Saint of China.

That standard of living increase is also evident in Chinese media and how people consume it. China now has just over 604 million internet users, more than twice that in the United States.

China maintains the illusion of freedom with plenty of state control by copying what works in the west and branding it as their own. Chana has their own version of Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, and other similar sites.

Here is a list of the top media in China and the numbers associated with them. It should help you to appreciate the raw power of people and technology harnessed by the state for control.

The information in the chart is from Danwei, an independent firm that tracks Chinese media and internet usage to provide "commercial intelligence."
