Cáritas Filipinas, que desde el pasado domingo está facilitando ayuda de primera necesidad a los damnificados por el tifón Yolanda, ha enviado 10 camiones con comida hacia Ormoc, en Leyte, 50 paquetes con medicinas y ropa a un hospital local en Cebú y un camión con suministros de socorro hacia la ciudad de Bogo, en el norte de esta misma isla, una de las más afectadas.

Las fuertes lluvias que se registran en la zona desde el martes, según apunta Cáritas, "están dificultando las operaciones de socorro y empeorando las ya de por sí precarias condiciones de vida de los sobrevivientes".

Según relata, más de 670 mil personas se han visto obligadas a abandonar sus hogares y se estima que unas 500 mil viviendas podrían haber quedado destruidas en las zonas que recibieron de lleno el impacto del tifón.

Por esa razón, la habilitación de refugios de emergencia sigue siendo una "máxima prioridad", según remarca Cáritas, que ya ha comprado 32.000 lonas para enviar a las zonas siniestradas.

Concretamente, en la ciudad de Tacloban, los equipos de Cáritas informan de que las calles permanecen inundadas, con lo que aumentan los problemas de salud y el riesgo de propagación de enfermedades a causa de los cuerpos todavía sin enterrar, la acumulación de basuras y el vertido de aguas residuales.

En una carta de solidaridad remitida a Cáritas Filipinas, el Obispo japonés, Mons. Isao Yama Kikuchi, presidente de Cáritas Asia, asegura que, en estrecha coordinación con las comunidades afectadas, harán todo lo posible "para ayudar a aliviar el sufrimiento de las familias afectadas, para reconstruir su vida y para contribuir al brillante futuro que les espera".
