Unemployment among African American teenagers at staggering 41.6 percent

A deeply distressful statistic emerged from last week's job report. While many remain in the U.S. remain unemployed, or only partially working, black teen unemployment is a troubling 41.6 percent. The unemployment was considerably lower the same time last year at 36 percent. Many feel that since almost half of all black teens who want to work can't find jobs is a strong mark against President Obama's economic policies.

American teens haven't yet given up hope and left the job market, something that has usually lowered the overall unemployment rate.

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - The rate is based upon the whole black teen population in the United States. The number was eight points lower at 33 percent as recently as the month of March. The white teen unemployment rate is half the black rate, but remains high at 20 percent.

American teens haven't yet given up hope and left the job market, something that has usually lowered the overall unemployment rate. The unemployment rate is based on those who want a job and are trying to find one.

President Obama and national Democrats have increased calls in recent months to raise the minimum wage or impose "living wages" on certain companies in urban areas. Minimum wage jobs are typically "first jobs," providing that critical first rung on the jobs' ladder. More than two-thirds of minimum wage employees receive a raise within the first year on the job.

"Our economic policies are abandoning a generation and threatening to create a permanent underclass. It is shameful," columnist Mike Flynn says.

While the overall U.S. unemployment rate is unchanged, today's jobs the recent job report say it's getting worse for African Americans. By comparison, white unemployment remained consistent at 7.4 percent. Hispanic and Latino unemployment was unchanged at 11 percent.
