Band was part of the 'British Invasion' that led to the Beatles

Bass player and co-founder of the Dave Clark five Rick Huxley has passed away at the age of 72. As a member of the prototypical "British Invasion" pop group, Huxley was part of the musical revolution in the 1960s that led to the introduction of the Beatles. In fact, the band's "Glad All Over" knocked "I Want to Hold Your Hand" out of the top spot on the U.K. singles.

Originally from Dartford in Kent, Rick Huxley remained in the line-up until the group disbanded in 1970. Huxley then pursued a career in real estate and the music business.

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - A heavy smoker, Huxley had battled emphysema for years, although bandleader Dave Clark said the bassist had recently been given a clean bill of health. Clark called Huxley's death "devastating . We'd talk once a week," Clark said. "I spoke to Rick on Friday, he was in great spirits."

The Dave Clark Five scored a number one with "Glad All Over" in January 1964, and twice went to number two - with "Bits And Pieces" later that year and in November 1967 with "Everybody Knows."

Other hits included "Catch Us If You Can" and their cover of The Contours' "Do You Love Me?"

Originally from Dartford in Kent, Huxley remained in the line-up until the group disbanded in 1970. Huxley then pursued a career in real estate and the music business.

Founded in 1958, the Dave Clark Five appeared on "The Ed Sullivan Show" just two weeks after the Beatles in February 1964. The group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2008.

"Rick was a dear friend and an immensely talented musician with an amazing sense of humor, he always made me smile," Clark said.

With the deaths of saxophonist Denis Payton in 2006, and singer and keyboard player Mike Smith in 2008, Clark and guitarist Lenny Davidson are the only surviving members of the band.
