LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - Described as "relatively unflappable" Cardinal Roger Mahony was deposed for 3 and-a-half hours on Saturday by attorneys representing the victim in a molestation case. Lawyers grilled Mahony with questions over how he handled cases which came to his desk.

Lawyers say he remained calm and collected during the deposition. The most recent deposition was filled with new questions that arose from the publication of church records concerning pedophile priests.

Following the deposition, Mahony was scheduled to board a flight to Italy where he will attend a papal conclave and participate in electing the new pope following the planned resignation of Benedict XVI on Feb. 28.

Mahony has been asked not to attend that conclave by concerned Catholics who fear his presence will taint the election of a new pope. The former archbishop was presented with a petition containing the signatures of nearly 10,000 Catholics who were asking him not to attend.

The petition was organized by Catholics United.

Church officials have not commented on Mahony's deposition or his departure to Rome.

I can personally guarantee that Cardinal Mahoney did leave for Rome as I was in a flight with him from Los Angeles to Frankfurt on Monday afternoon (arriving on Tuesday) and stood next to him in customs as he was continuing on from Frankfurt, presumably to Rome.

To be forgiven, you must first ask forgiveness. Repentance, admission of guilt, abandonment of sin, asking forgiveness -- all of these are necessary before a person can be absolved. Had Cardinal Mahoney admitted the guilt that is amply evidenced in the released documents, and had he stopped trying to justify his acts, and had he asked simply for the mercy of forgiveness, he could and should have been forgiven. But he did none of that. Confronted by the fact that he had clearly known that what he had been doing was wrong -- not innocent mistake but willful wrongdoing -- he accused Archbishop Gomez of wrongdoing in calling Cardinal Mahoney to account! This is not the behavior of a penitent and it is not a request for forgiveness. Anything he touches, including a papal election, is tainted until he repents, admits his guilt, condemns his own wrongdoing, and then -- and only then -- asks forgiveness.

Catholics need to forgive Cardinal Mahoney, as our father forgives us. How will you be forgiven if you do not practice this? he is human and has suffered temptations and sinned and thats why Jesus died for us! so we may be forgiven, we need to forgive all clergy and all people of sins and pray for them....it is not up to us to judge...there is only one judge and its not us!

I have never been a fan of Cdl Mahony but I do think he is doing the right thing. I think he should be there. Do people think that he will successfully convince his brother cardinals to pick a Pope that would go easy on bishops that have made similar mistakes to what he has? His very presence at the conclave will more likely serve as a fresh reminder that we need a Pope that will continue the work that Pope Benedict XVI has started with clearing this 'smoke' from the sanctuary.
