LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - The girl, known only as "Dafne," gave birth to her baby on January 27 in Zoquipan Hospital, in Zapopan, Mexico's western Jalisco state. The baby weighed 5.95 pounds.

"The girl was just over eight when she got pregnant. The father is a boy who is 17, but we have not found him, since he ran away," Dafne's mother says.

The search is on for the baby's father. "We are looking for the young man to get his story because she does not understand what has happened," Jorge Villasenor, from the state prosecutors' office said. "This is a rape or child sex abuse case."

Both mother and daughter were released from the hospital over the weekend, apparently doing well. The hospital says it will have to do extensive follow-up due to the new mother's age.

Other notable young mothers include Lina Medina, from Ticrapo in Peru, who gave birth to a baby boy named Gerardo by caesarean section at the age of five years and seven months old in May 1939. Her parents thought she had a tumor but when she was taken to hospital, when it was discovered she was seven months pregnant.

In addition, Yelizaveta "Liza" Gryshchenko had just turned six when she gave birth to a stillborn baby girl in the Soviet Union in August 1934. The infant's father turned out to be Liza's 69-year-old maternal grandfather. The family emigrated after the scandal.

There was also the case of a six-year-old girl, known only as 'H' who gave birth to a daughter by caesarean section in June 1972 in Delhi, India. She was initially admitted to hospital with what was thought to be an abdominal tumor.

In an instance closer to the most recent case, an unidentified Indian girl died during childbirth, along with her baby, in August 1933. She was just eight years old.

As recently as last year, a 10-year-old girl in Colombia gave birth to a baby girl.

The girl, from the indigenous Wayuu tribe, was 39 weeks pregnant when she appeared at a hospital in pain from contractions and bleeding. Giving birth at a young age is said to be typical of Wayuu customs.
