Latest attacks draws line between Nigeria's Muslim north and Christian south
Dozens feared dead and injured in attacks on Christian churches
The latest attacks in the strife-torn nation of Nigeria have only drawn
attention to the tensions between its Muslim north and Christian south.
Dozens are feared dead and injured after two separate attacks on
churches in Nigeria during services this past weekend. The government
reports that a suicide bomber detonated himself near a church in the
central city of Jos, while gunmen attacked another church in Biu in the
Nigeria's northeast.
A purported spokesman for Boko Haram, the militant Islamic group claimed responsibility for both attacks.
Al Jazeera correspondent Yvonne Ndgee reported that the "suicide bomber attempted to drive into the Christ Chosen Church in the Jos metropolis.
"The chief of police has spoken to the local press there [in Jos], and he says that three persons have been killed in this attack. One of them, the suicide bomber, and two others died in unclear circumstances."
Two others people have reportedly died after chaos and violence broke out following the blast.
"Police have announced that 48 people have been taken to various hospitals in the Jos metropolis with varying degrees of injuries," Ndege said.
In the meanwhile, in the city of Biu in northeast Nigeria's Borno state, gunmen opened fire during a service at an EYN church, an acronym that means "Church of the Brethren in Nigeria."
Gunmen sprayed the congregation with bullets, killing and wounding many of them, witnesses said.
"Three gunmen came to the premises of the church and started firing at people outside the church before going into the main building to carry on their killings ... Many people have been killed and wounded," witness Hamidu Wakawa, present at the church at the time of the attack says.
Borno State Police Commissioner Bala Hassan confirmed the attack took place and said officers were investigating.
A purported spokesman for Boko Haram, the militant Islamic group claimed responsibility for both attacks.
"We are responsible for the suicide attack on a church in Jos and also another attack on another church in Biu," spokesman Abul Qaqa said.
"We launched these attacks to prove the Nigerian security wrong and to debunk their claim that we have been weakened by the military crackdown."

I have suggested the xians should worship at their various house fellowship centers and not in church for now... This unrepentant Boko Haram are not jokers & xians would have to have their church securities harmed with guns too....instead of trusting God alone for their security
First Muslim doesn't mean peace it mean "If you turn to Muslim you will be in peace."and second the narrow minded Muslim they believe that the Christians are all sinners and they should be dead, and you right Jerzy May God help us.
If Abul Qaqa said their attacks is to prove security wrong abt stopping them then why must such attacks be on christian fellows? What does xtians have to do wit security? They are nw portraying smtin difrnt nt Islam as a religion of peace as stated.... Lord have mercy
Why is it invariably Islam 'the religion of peace' that opens fire on Christians and anyone else who stands in their way?
What are they so afraid of that warrants such heinous acts of violence against the innocent at prayer?
May God help us all to resolve fear and misunderstandings between people so as to stop such terrible acts in the future. Holy Mary Mother of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ - Ora pro Nobis.
