St. Maria Goretti Comments

Born in Corinaldo, Ancona, Italy, on October 16 1890; her farmworker father moved his family to Ferrier di Conca, near Anzio. Her father died of malaria and her mother had to struggle to feed her children. In 1902 an eighteen-year-old neighbor, Alexander, grabbed her from her steps and tried to rape her. When Maria said that she would rather died than submit, Alexander began stabbing her with a knife. As she lay in the hospital, she ... Continue Reading

I am most inspired by how St. Maria was able to forgive the man who assaulted her - and how her mother, God Bless her, did so also.

Especially since I am now in a situation where I am struggling to forgive a man who assaulted someone whom I love dearly; it's not the easiest of things to do and requires a supernatural grace.

I feel blessed, however, in that I have both the richness of the traditions of the Catholic Church, and the richness found in scripture, to strengthen and bear me up during this time. My faith is strong, and it is through this gift of faith that I will manage to forgive this man. I pray that he, too, may one day find that Faith in Christ will change his life.

    Thanks be to God.

Although I am Protestant, I was given this link by a Catholic friend who knows I am a rape victim. The story was very inspiring to me because even though I have mostly gotten over my experience, I still am having trouble forgiving my attacker. I am bookmarking this site. THank you.

She is an amazing Saint. In modern days, a lot of people can't forgive someone for accidentally tripping them or spilling their coffee or something dumb like that. Maria could forgive the man who killed her. She wanted him to be in Heaven with her. She didn't want God to lay sin against him. She was so kind. I hope people can become more forgiving after they read her story. Did you know she is nicknamed the "Saint Agnes of the 20th Century"? I bet that she and Saint Agnes hang out a lot together in Heaven. They are both so amazing. I love them. If I ever have two daughters, I'm naming the second one Maria.
