Dear st Maria Goretti, today's Gospel tells us of Matthew's calling, after which Jesus ate and drank with tax collectors. In the conversation which followed Jesus told off the people who accused Him of being in the company of sinners. Our Lord's answer reminds me of the many times I have put sacrifice ahead of mercy. Now after all these years, in my old age I recall how often I had dealt my children without mercy, thinking that discipline was the greater of the two. St. Maria Goretti, help me to repent and to make up for all the missed opportunites. I now realise more than ever that mercy is greater than sacrifice. I pray that Jesus will make all things right. Amen.
St. Maria Goretti, I heard of ever since I was a ten year old. Your name and story of virtue, suffering and forgiveness stays for ever in my mind and especially today on your feast day. Maria Goretti is a truly inspiring person. I hope I can be just like her someday. It took a lot of bravery and faith to stand up to Alessandro even though he had a ten inch dagger. She is the most inspiring I probably will ever read about. I'm a seventh grader this year and even though I won't go to comfirmation until next year my religion teacher wants us to write our reports now, and she is going to be m confirmation saint!
