I'm sorry Bill. It just seems like you are saying more political fighting is what we need. Maybe we do need that, but thus far it not only seems to be getting us no where, but actually the other side seems to make more gains.

I'm talking about conversion and discipleship. Because without those two elements, it's just a political rally devoid of Jesus. I think this is what we have today by and large and why so many are just getting turned off. Religion has become more of a prop to win an election rather than a way someone lives.

Seems like there is a fine line between righteous anger and hating your neighbor....I wonder if we've crossed it.

    Rob,
You want bottom up instead of top down?
What do you think I meant when I said If we the laity, the Church Militant, are to be the martyrs for the faith standing together against the forces of evil which are consuming our nation as it progresses on the administrations path into oblivion then so it must be.?

I am really feeling sad to read some comments on the meaningfull article by Cardinal Dolan. Rafe Marie says that "the Church is as holy as the clergy" It is not so. Church is holy because it is the Church of God. We including priests are sinners and the Church is meant to treat us and make us saints. Similarly Darthj says that " Cardinal to first prevent Biden and such others from receiving Communion" Neither Church nor Cardinal Dolan has police power to prevent anyone. The Church and its anointed clergy will continue to preach the truth and advise those who stray to repent and join the path laid out by Jesus. When purposely Biden or Pelosi ridicules Jesus and His Church, provoke the authorities with a view to escalate and get publicity we may have to ignore and pray for them

Our Church used to teach " There is no salvation outside the Church" . The Church knew that God has his ways and plans to save all as He has given the people the conscience and freedom. This was correctly interpreted in plain words " If Christ is not known due to no fault of those who do not know , such persons if they live as per the dictates of their conscience will also be saved. This has been wrongly interpreted by some clergy as well as lay persons and it came to mean that baptism and religion is not important. This is the main reason that stands in the way of Evangelization. Also people have started interpreting sexual morality independently, based on the so called "conscience" not formed taking into account the teachings of the Church. Even some theologians differed from the teachings of the Magisterium A kind of Spiritual vaccum existed sometime. Pope John Paul was strong in his assertions and taught that the Church is the depository of Truth and its teachings are sacred for all of the believers. During the vacuum, the teachings from the pulpits were either "NIL" or in some cases slightly irresponsible Now Cardinal Dolan and the U S Bishops have realised and we hope things are being rectified. Let us believe in Him who said " Do not be afraid; I am with you always" Then why should we be afraid of anti catholic governments or secularist or atheists ?

Seems to me Bill that if we first don't get serious about evangelizing our brothers and sisters, there will be no army to fight. I think wnen we move our focus from the bottom up instead of the top down, we will win.

Continue to get mired in politics is going to get us no where. Folks just don't care.

God bless you Father Dolan for your succinct tongue, clear head, and unyielding spirit...your undertanding of people and God; and the relationship between God and modern man is to be praised. May you continue to enrich the Church and modern man with Eternal Truth. May the Eternal Light always shine forth from your spirit.

    God bless you.

The argument for the Church changing it's position on same sex marriage is scriptural. God does not second guess Himself. He does not change his mind. What was wrong in Leviticus and Romans is wrong today. I am surprised he said nothing about contraception and birth control. There lies the biggest disconnect. My stepdaughter who was Baptized Catholic and calls herself catholic screams for women's reproductive rights and the ''right'' to birth control. Even my wife who had four children before she married me and was brutally raped over 21 years ago this month is for legal abortion in the case of rape. Opinions in the pew vary but I for one have to go back to scripture. God does not change His mind.

First, thank you for calling me out. I apologize for going off point to express my desire to get to the crux of what most of the faithful have seen as the basic problem with the Church in America for years, strong and out spoken leadership founded on truthful teaching of church doctrine and the Catechism of Faith. Allow me to repeat the case for martyrdom.

Anyone who thinks we should set our faith aside in America in order to avoid stepping over the line in this current political battle for the soul of our country is courting disaster.
One thing is abundantly clear to any Catholic who understands the faith as shepherded by our Holy Father in Rome and that is the current regime in Washington D.C. under Barack Obama is by far the most anti-Catholic administration in the history of our country. The really sad thing is that our bishops had too long avoided the fight for fear of being accused of mixing politics and religion, and in the case of Obama the dreadful racist label from the media, allowing those of weak faith within their flocks who entered the political arena selling their souls to party platforms in opposition to our faith and values to establish a pattern of Christian capitulation.
We and our societal standards based on the founders reliance on Divine guidance are no longer recognized as a legitimate challenge to the status quo separation phrase used to deny them. Our elected officials who were put into office to protect our freedoms have chosen to be a ruling class unto themselves. Those like Pelosi, Biden, Kerry, Dodd, Sebelius and many others show no remorse for pandering to the enemies of Holy Mother Church and by default are parts of the problem. The situation has become grave and we, with guidance from bishops who now realize just how serious the administration is in its effort to remove all obstacles to a full blown secularist society, have to get involved in the fight for the soul of America.
It is time to stop pretending we are powerless to defend ourselves from those who have abandoned piety in favor of personal power and prestige. If we the laity, the Church Militant, are to be the martyrs for the faith standing together against the forces of evil which are consuming our nation as it progresses on the administrations path into oblivion then so it must be. It has and always must be for true followers of Christ a requirement to assist the Spirit of Pentecost within us in bringing forth upon our world the will of God to have life more abundant using the power of His Truth to make and keep men free. It is our duty, along with the message of hope and change within the church of Christ, to open the hearts of men to depend on the creators love to guide us to the place he is preparing for us not to succumb to the lure of an ever expanding totalitarian Marxist styled government promising to provide our every need in order to make us slaves to a godless political system.

Cardinal Dolan says " No matter our personal inclinations, God's position as explained through the Magisterial instructions are permanent and unflinchingly binding ". This is the most important thing every Catholic should believe and announce. Admitting the so called "sexual orientation" , departure from the catholic teachings on "marriage", "premarital sex" infidelity, abortion, homosexual acts cannot be approved or sanctioned in any circumstances. There is no question of any hatred by the Church towards any kind of people who break the Commandmends of God and the Commandments of the Church. God and the Church patiently and lovingly wait for the sinners to repent and become the children of God. But sin is sin and cannot be twisted or interpreted as something else quoting science or govt. or celebrities.

It's the Bishops and Cardinals that are "out of touch" with the American Catholics. They only speak up when it touches their pocketbook. Against Obamacare, not because of contraception mandates, but because their insurance premiums will go up. As one commenter said, thank goodness that an American Cardinal was not considered for Pope. Does anyone know of a American Cardinal that is as holy, down to earth, and less concern about wealth than Pope Francis? None could carry his shoe straps.
