Parents and students also have the legitimate right to understand this entire matter ... and why many theologians have not requested the mandatum. Failure to obtain the mandatum is not tantamount to heresy. There are legitimate questions with its regard concerning the baptismal priesthood of the laity and how lay theologians exercise their baptismal priesthood as teachers of theology. In addition, a canonical imbalance remains with regard to how the teachings of theologians are evaluated in times of disagreement with the bishops. Episcopal ordination grants certain sacramental and ecclesial powers to the bishop, but it does not guarantee theological savvy.
