Surprising and Historic Vote: Archbishop Timothy Dolan Elected as President of United States Bishops Conference Comments

Most pundits and ecclesial commentators strongly predicted Bishop Gerald Kicanas of Tucson would be elected to succed Cardinal George on Tuesday, November 16, 2010. In response to what they considered a foregone conclusion, a portion of the Catholic blogosphere was preparing to respond with anything but glowing acclamation. Then, a surprise of the Holy Spirit occurred, demonstrating, once again, who is really in charge of His Church. The ... Congrats to Bishop Dolan.

    Edward and Anne,

How can an employer, any employer, have too many employees in this economy? How is that possible? Are you not the same ones complaining that unemployment is too high? USCCB is a private organization with many employees. Bully for the bishops to see that people need jobs.

As for the employees following CCC 2 ed, Anne, my particular parish hires non Catholics routinely. We hire the best candidate. I am aware that at another parish they hired a jewish woman; apparently she was the best candidate but certainly not one who follows Catechism. I am certain USCCB hires the best candidates; it would be foolish not to.

So if Bishop Kicanas had been elected, would the Holy Spirit not really be in charge of His Church?

Let's hope this means a continued move in the right direction for our bishops as far as boldly proclaiming the truth and teachings of the Church goes. It's high time our bishops be the leaders and voice of the Church that was needed 40 years ago with Humanae Vitae and Roe v. Wade. We might not be looking back on 50 million babies murdered over 40 years, had they spoken out more firmly. Instead we still have millions of "Catholics" voting for the party of death.

Having had an opportunity to meet Archbishop Dolan and listen to him speak on many occasions when he was in Milwaukee, I can't think of anyone better to take this seat. God bless him and may he help lead the flock in the US to a deeper understanding of our Church and Jesus our savior.

He will have much work to do before the USCCB can be trusted again - if ever. Of the $82 million US dollars donated in January specifically for Haitian Relief, 40% was deverted to Latin America for ecclesistical work. So far $1.3M in aid has been provided to Haiti. As our Pope said, Conferences should exist to serve the Bishops in their specific territory. When I saw their budget, it appears that Bishop's US Diocese are expected to serve the Conference with forced donations - supporting a wasteful beaurocracy that is not centered on Saving Souls but on worldly "community organizing" and fund raising. Although a minority of Bishops are trying to correct things, atheist Saul Alinsky's mark is still alive and well. The 300+ employees at the USCCB should be cut in half for starters, and those remaining should be required to support all aspects of required Church Doctrine which is encompassed in the "CCC 2nd ED".

What about Archbishop Dolan's inability to get Xavior Church under control regarding their homosexual web page with the gay colored cross, and social (not religious) meetings of Lesbians - as openly advertized? Of course, he was definately better than Kicanas. The USCCB is not the Magesterium of the Church, has too many employees, has too many programs that have nothing to do with the Saving of Souls,

Praise God for speaking loudly in HIs church! Remembering that Jesus said "the gates of hell will not prevail again the church He establishes.

This is a very happy day for the Catholic church.

3,700 a day, die from abortion in U.S. this is a barbaric act in the greatest nation on earth, this must not stand or we face chastisement, I hope the Archbishop can powerfully enforce church teachings, and reach out to the Evangelical, Protestant, Mormon community, and also congress with one voice, America is ready.
