I have been a pro-lifer for as long as I can remember, since I learned the definition of abortion in high school, in fact. Generally speaking, my favorite and most frequently recommended books for the movement and for neutral seekers are those autobiographical accounts that take us into the horrors of the industry. I have never read any pro-life fiction, so I didn't know what to expect. The potential pitfalls are two in number: that the writing would be weak, or that the message would suffer. In Anthony Collins' novella, both pitfalls are cleanly escaped. Collins writes characters both gritty and relatable, reminding me of the types and rhythms of my favorite novelist, Ralph Ellison. Collins' characters pull you along into an adeptly constructed world, and there you see a loud and clear anti-abortion message that is neither didactic nor prosaic, just plain and unavoidably true. Give this novella a chance, regardless of your current beliefs.
