'Think Like a Man' tops at U.S. box office
'Avengers' cleaning up in Europe,; domestic release to follow
The ensemble African American comedy "Think Like A Man" kept its top
spot at the nation's box offices for what was a relatively quiet weekend
before the rush of big-budget adventures that typify summer releases.
In a sure Sign of Things to Come, the superhero blockbuster "The
Avengers" cleaned up at the European box office, just prior to its May 4
release stateside.
The ensemble African American comedy 'Think Like A Man' kept its top spot at the nation's box offices for what was a relatively quiet weekend before the rush of big-budget adventures that typify summer releases.
"Man" easily beat out last week's No. 2 film "The Lucky One." The Warner Bros. movie, based on a Nicholas Spark romance novel and starring Zac Ephron, took in $11.6 million from 3,175 locations.
Sony's animated family film "Pirates! Band of Misfits," was firmly in the No. 3 spot with $11.5 from 3,358 locations.
"The Five-Year Engagement," a raunchy, R-rated comedy from Universal, was a disappointing fourth. Written by Jason Segel and Nick Stoller, it took in $11.2 million from 2,936 locations. The film, with a production budget of $30 million, received a B- from Cinemascore from an audience that said the film would appeal to older woman, 35 and older.
The weekend's two other new movies, "Safe" from Lionsgate and "The Raven" from Relativity, finished sixth and seventh, with $7.7 million and $7.2 million respectively.
On the other side of the pond, Marvel's The Avengers" is already breaking international records.
Joss Whedon's Marvel adventure brought in an estimated $178.4 million overseas. "The Avengers" also had the biggest opening weekend ever in 12 countries, including Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Ecuador, Peru, Central America, Bolivia, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Malaysia, New Zealand and the Philippines.
The worldwide phenomenon "The Hunger Games" remained in fourth place.
